Rocket’s Story

Rocket didn’t arrive at the shelter nameless.

He was wearing a collar with “Rocket” written on it—a heartbreaking reminder that someone once knew who he was. Yet when Animal Control picked him up, there was no microchip, no owner information, and no one ever came looking for him.

Now Rocket is running out of time.

The shelter quickly labeled him as aggressive after he arrived. Reports describe him baring his teeth, snapping, and lunging whenever staff approached. His fear was so intense that veterinarians had to sedate him inside the Animal Control truck just to perform his initial examination.

But when you look beyond the behavior, a very different picture begins to emerge.

Rocket wasn’t a healthy dog acting out without reason. His medical exam revealed pain everywhere. His ears were severely infected—filled with debris, swollen, bleeding, and painful. His mouth was bleeding after he bit his own tongue during the stressful capture. His paws were raw and ulcerated with abrasions and dried blood. He was also underweight, with a body condition score of only 4/9.

Pain, fear, confusion, and abandonment can make even the most loyal dog believe he has to defend himself.

Despite treatment, Rocket’s behavior continued to deteriorate inside the shelter. The constant noise, confinement, and repeated handling only pushed him further into survival mode. Staff ultimately determined he was too dangerous for public adoption and issued a rescue-only plea. As of July 16, notes describe a significant decline, stating he had become offensively aggressive inside his kennel.

Rocket desperately needs a rescue experienced with frightened German Shepherds—someone who understands that behavior in a shelter is not always behavior in a home.

With decompression, experienced handling, continued medical care, and time to heal, dogs like Rocket are often given the chance to become completely different animals. But none of that can happen if he loses his life before a rescue can step forward.
