Foster Dog Story – FROM EUTH LIST TO LOVED

This is a foster dog story that almost didn’t happen.

Do you remember Butterscotch #A1962349?

She was on the euthanasia list at OC Animal Care. Her only “fault” was being terrified. Surrounded by the noise and chaos of the shelter, she was completely frozen in fear, unable to show the beautiful, loving dog hiding behind the panic. 💔

But the rescue community refused to let her story end there. Her photo was shared, her plea was networked, and a foster home stepped up.

Today, her name is Billie. 🧡

She is safe. She is in my home, learning to trust, discovering that people can be kind, and enjoying the life she almost never had.

A huge thank you to Bubbles Dog Rescue for stepping up and saving her life when time was running out. Organizations like Bubbles are on the front lines, pulling dogs off euthanasia lists and giving them a fighting chance .

And thank you to every volunteer who networked her—everyone who shared her posts, advocated for her, and refused to let her be forgotten. Your efforts mattered. You gave Billie a future. 🙏

Why Fostering is the Heartbeat of Rescue

Billie’s journey from a frozen, terrified shelter dog to a beloved family member is a testament to the power of fostering. She didn’t need a perfect home to start her new life; she needed a safe place to land.

Fostering saves lives in several crucial ways:

  • It Heals Fear: For a dog like Billie, frozen in fear, the shelter environment can be overwhelming. A foster home provides a quiet, calm space where she could decompress . The transformation doesn’t happen overnight—sometimes it takes days or even weeks for a scared dog to feel safe enough to trust again .
  • It Shows Them Love: Fostering bridges the gap between a traumatic past and a bright future. It shows terrified dogs that people can be kind and that the world isn’t so scary after all. It creates a foundation for them to learn and thrive.
  • It Frees Up Shelter Space: Every dog in a foster home is one less dog in the shelter. This is critical for overcrowded shelters, allowing them to make room for other animals in need, as seen at OC Animal Care .
  • It Prevents Euthanasia: By pulling dogs from high-risk shelters, foster homes and the rescues that support them directly save lives. Without this critical step, many dogs—like Billie—would have no future .

The Rescue Ecosystem: How Hope Paws Support Fund Makes It Possible

Billie’s rescue was made possible by a network of dedicated people and organizations. A key part of this ecosystem is ensuring that rescues have the financial backing they need to act.

Hope Paws Support Fund is a 100% volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Lake Forest, California, that was founded on a simple but profound belief: financial hardship should never be a death sentence for a dog . They fund the critical operations that make rescues like Billie’s possible:

  • Rescue & Pull Support: This project funds the “pull fees” that rescue organizations need to extract dogs from high-risk shelters like OC Animal Care. For an average of $500 per dog, they literally unlock the kennel door, enabling partners like Bubbles Dog Rescue to save lives . In 2026, they aim to fund the pull of 24 dogs from euthanasia lists .
  • Emergency Veterinary Care Fund: They provide direct financial assistance for veterinary clinics. This helps ensure that families don’t have to choose between their dog and their financial stability, covering critical surgeries and care .
  • Dog Transportation Network: This program supports safe travel to move dogs from overcrowded shelters to foster and adoptive homes. Distance should never be a barrier to a second chance .

Every share, every comment, every plea can make a difference. Billie is living proof that a second chance can change everything. 🧡

Rescue works. Fostering saves lives. Networking matters.
