EMERGENCY UPDATE: Volunteers Stepping In to Save Funshine Bear

Because we were unable to raise funds for professional transport, three dedicated OC Animal Care volunteers—who advocate daily for shelter dogs—are stepping up to personally transport Funshine Bear to her rescue in Idaho.

This is an incredible act of compassion.

One volunteer will take Funshine Bear in for at least two days to give her a break from the shelter. Then, another volunteers will continue the journey, driving her all the way to McCall, Idaho and into the care of Rosie’s Rainbow Senior Dog Sanctuary.

But we urgently need help covering their travel costs.

We are urgently raising $421 to help cover round-trip transport for Funshine Bear from Tustin, CA to McCall, ID and back. Based on about 2,000 miles total, current gas prices, and one overnight hotel stay, this amount helps our volunteer transport team get her safely to rescue.

Help Transport Funshine Bear to Her Rescue in Idaho

Funshine Bear has been given the chance so many shelter dogs never receive.

After spending weeks at OC Animal Care, a rescue stepped forward and committed to saving her. Rosie’s Rainbow Senior Dog Sanctuary in McCall, Idaho has opened its doors and its heart to this beautiful girl. Now we need your help to get her there.

Funshine Bear (A1964387) is a 7-year-old, 45-pound spayed Boxer/German Shepherd mix who entered OC Animal Care as a stray on June 5, 2026. She is currently seeking rescue placement due to extensive medical needs and remains at risk while waiting for transport.

Despite everything she has endured, Funshine Bear has never stopped being gentle.

Shelter staff describe her as friendly, easy to handle, potty trained, knows basic commands, walks beautifully on leash, and has been non-reactive with other dogs. She greets people with kindness, cooperates during veterinary exams, and continues to wag her tail even after weeks in the shelter.

Unfortunately, her medical condition is heartbreaking.

Veterinarians have documented:

• Multiple mammary masses, including a large 4 cm mass with concern for mammary cancer
• Osteoarthritis causing a stiff gait and hind-leg discomfort
• Significant muscle wasting and weight loss
• Cloudy eyes with lens opacity
• A mass on her right nostril
• Dermatitis requiring ongoing treatment
• An upper respiratory infection (CIRDC)
• Cachexia requiring further medical evaluation

She has received medications including Gabapentin for arthritis pain, Vitamin B12, Apoquel, Cefpodoxime, and Doxycycline while shelter veterinarians worked to keep her comfortable.

During one of the worst shelter overcrowding crises in decades, senior dogs with medical needs are often overlooked. Funshine Bear was in danger of becoming another heartbreaking statistic.

Then hope arrived.

Rosie’s Rainbow Senior Dog Sanctuary committed to giving her the specialized care, medical attention, and love she deserves. Instead of spending her remaining years in a kennel—or worse—she now has the opportunity to live in a safe sanctuary surrounded by people who care.

There is only one obstacle left.

Transportation.

The rescue is hundreds of miles away in McCall, Idaho, and getting Funshine Bear safely from Southern California to her new home requires funding for professional transport, fuel, travel supplies, and coordination.
