Ella is a 5-year-old Australian Cattle Dog, weighing just 33 lbs. She was hit by a car.

She is a nursing mama. Her body is still producing milk for puppies she cannot reach. She is lactating – She is lactating – her body is still producing milk after being separated from her puppies.

She is injured, scared, and alone in a shelter. She is in pain. She is confused. And somewhere out there, her puppies are waiting for a mother who may never come back.

Ella’s Medical Condition

Ella was brought to OC Animal Care as a stray on July 25, 2026, after being hit by a car. She is lactating – she has been nursing puppies.

Her injuries include:

• Road rash with skin wounds
• Head trauma
• Soft tissue pain
• Right forelimb lameness (grade 2/4) – causing discomfort and reluctance to walk
• Perivulvar region road rash
• Lactating – her body is still producing milk

Prognosis: Guarded.

X-rays show no fractures – no broken ribs, no broken limbs, no spinal fractures.

Ella received pain medication, a methadone injection, Convenia antibiotic treatment, wound cleaning, and monitoring. She does not need surgery, but she needs continued pain management, wound care, and a safe environment to heal.

At her follow-up examination, Ella remained nervous but was eating, and her wounds showed improvement with reduced swelling and redness.

As an Australian Cattle Dog, Ella may be especially affected by the stress of a shelter environment. She needs rescue, continued care, and a safe place to recover.
