Dog Rescue Riverside Shelter: A Mom, Three Puppies, and a Shar Pei Given a Second Chance

In overcrowded shelters across California, dogs often face a race against time. This dog rescue Riverside shelter story began in late February when a young Doberman Pinscher mother and her three tiny puppies were among the many animals at risk inside the Riverside County Animal Control – Riverside Shelter.

At the same time, another dog — a gentle Chinese Shar-Pei named Penne — was also facing an uncertain future.

Within days, all five dogs would receive the miracle every shelter animal hopes for: rescue. Their journey would become a powerful dog rescue Riverside shelter success story.

Biscuit Momma and Her Puppies

The young Doberman mother, lovingly called Biscuit Momma, arrived at the shelter as a stray after being found near Perris.

She was only two years old and still nursing her puppies. Shelter environments are extremely stressful for nursing mothers and fragile young pups, making their situation especially urgent.

Her three puppies were:

Waffle – female
Cookie – male
Muffin – male

At only about six weeks old, the puppies depended completely on their mother.

Because the shelter was overcrowded and the family required special care, they were placed on an urgent rescue list.

Thankfully, compassionate rescuers stepped forward in time.

📅 On March 9, the entire Doberman family was rescued.

Instead of growing up in a kennel, the puppies now have the chance to develop in a safe foster environment while their mother can finally rest and recover.

Penne the Shar Pei

Another dog at the shelter was also fighting for a second chance.

Penne, a three-year-old Chinese Shar Pei, had been found near Clay Street and Van Buren Boulevard — just steps away from the shelter itself.

She was described as:

about 45 pounds
tan coat with signature Shar Pei wrinkles
dog selective, meaning she requires careful introductions with other dogs

Penne had been placed under behavioral evaluation and was also considered at risk due to the crowded shelter conditions.

But her story also took a positive turn.

📅 On March 11, Penne was rescued.

The dog who once faced an uncertain fate inside the shelter now has the opportunity to begin a new chapter with people who will help her thrive.
